Highbury Education Centre awarded 2016-17 Musicians in Schools Program Grant
The Deep Roots’ Musicians in Schools Program was initiated last year as part of Deep Roots Music Cooperative’s ongoing mission to create meaningful connections between cultures, community groups, artists and audiences by offering music-related events and programs throughout the year, and we are pleased to announce the recipient of this year’s funding. Local artist Heather Kelday will be supported in a program she is implementing with students at Highbury Education Centre in New Minas, Nova Scotia. “We are very excited about the program this year because of the tremendous relationship Heather has already begun to develop with the students at HEC” said Peter Mowat Chair of the DRMC Board of Directors.
The program at Highbury Education Centre will unfold over the next several months and will incorporate musical workshops and opportunities for students to perform, and may also include a visit to a local recording studio.
About Highbury Education Centre
Located in New Minas, Nova Scotia, and an institution of the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board, Highbury Education Centre’s (HEC) mission is to provide a high school educational opportunity for students who, for a variety of reasons, have difficulty coping with the conventional structures, instructional methods and curriculum delivery of the traditional school setting and are unable to achieve success in the traditional school environment. HEC uses holistic based experiential learning strategies to help students obtain credits towards their high school graduation, while providing them with some of the skills to help them become successful members of their communities.

About Heather Kelday
A performer who blends folk-roots, blues and bluegrass, Heather Kelday writes in the creative spirit of indie-pop music, while rooting her songs in folk melodies. Heather’s strong voice, multi-instrumental talents (including banjo, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, mandolin and piano), and lyrical passion for the natural world carve a unique place for her in Canada’s music scene.
After 6 years as a solo artist, audiences have come to expect a Heather Kelday show to include unique compositions and collaborations with talented back-up musicians of varied genres in folk, blues, Celtic, world music, bluegrass and more. Most recently, she has teamed up with fellow songwriter Kim Barlow to form an old-time band called ‘Ida Red’.

The Deep Roots Music Cooperative has just completed another fabulous year. Now we are planning for 2017 and we need your help.
2017 is Canada’s 150th birthday and we want to help our communities celebrate it in style. Beginning in May with our contribution to the Apple Blossom Festival then with Wolfville’s Mud Creek days, and culminating with our annual Deep Roots Music Festival in September with perhaps other events in between we intend to have the whole Valley humming tunes from your favourite musicians. Please tell us who you would like to see.
If you want to let us know what you think please click on the link below and fill in the on line survey that is on our Facebook page. One lucky respondent will win a pair of tickets to our Blossom Blues event in May.
Deep Roots Music Festival 2016 was a resounding success … great weather, sold out shows, and a general festive atmosphere all around town.
Just to name a few of the many highlights … Thursday night’s collaboration between David Myles and Classified gave many a new appreciation of rap music, the Saturday late night party at the Wolfville farmers’ market was amazing, the Rise Up Singing tribute to Ron Hines on Sunday morning, led by Lennie Gallant, was a tremendous success with a record number of attendees and about $2500 and two car loads of food raised for the food bank; and over the weekend, a number of new young Maritime bands, Port Cities, Hillsburn, and Ten Strings and a Goat Skin, were showcased … all of whom received standing ovations.
So much talent on our stages. So heartwarming to see and feel the way music brings people together, on all kinds of levels. So worthwhile!!!
Now, we turn to planning for next year … remember, you are part of the experience and your input is always appreciated, in fact, your input is necessary to help create the festival as it evolves.
