2016 Deep Roots Festival News

For Immediate Release – June 30, 2016

WOLFVILLE, NS – The Deep Roots Music Festival is very excited to announce its line-up for 2016. The annual festival takes place September 22nd to 25th in Wolfville, Nova Scotia and surrounding area. This year’s line-up is well rooted in the Maritimes and boasts several new and interesting collaborations. A Festival Kick-off concert will feature a special acoustic performance by Classified (Juno Award winner) and David Myles (CBC East Coast Music Hour) – together on stage! ‘Early Bird’ passes are available until July 15th.
Your pass gets you into all main stage shows, afternoon collaborations, and access to the Festival Club as ‘home base’ for the weekend. Passes available for 3 or 4 Days (includes the Thursday night Kick-off Concert).
The Friday evening main stage at the Festival Theatre will spotlight our host Heather Rankin, an Acadia University graduate. Kim Dunn, whose songs will also be featured, will join her. Another collaboration to look forward to on Friday night is Susan Crowe and Cindy Church (Nova Scotia Country Music Hall of Fame) – bringing wisdom and grace to our stage. The night will include Wolfville returnee Alex Kehler (Les Siffleurs de Nuits) with his musical partner Nicholas Williams (Crowfoot, Genticorum) from Quebec.

We are delighted that Lennie Gallant will be on our Saturday main stage, September 24 as well as his nephew’s exciting band, PEI’s renowned Ten Strings and a Goat Skin. CBC Searchlight Contest national finalists, Hillsburn, a young group turning heads, will astound us with great songs, sibling harmony and incredible arrangements. To top it off another unexpected pairing, Matthew Barber and Jill Barber will join the fun with great pride and a healthy dose of brotherly and sisterly love to present The Family Album!

Get your dancing shoes ready: Friday late night at the Old Orchard Inn Barn with John Campbelljohn, joined by Theresa Malenfant and Joe Murphy (after the two grace Celtic Hall, Paddy’s Pub, Kentville  8pm-NOTE: THIS SHOW HAS BEEN MOVED TO THE UNION STREET CAFE IN BERWICK).  Saturday late night at Wolfville Farmers’ Market 2 local groups will get your mojo working. The Conqueroots and The Basin Brothers are sure to get the place hoppin’!

Darrin Harvey will host the Closing Concert on Sunday. He will reveal the annual Valley Arts Award recipient and introduce local dynamo group Ida Red, roots balladeer Scott Cook, Sussex, Port Cities, and more!

Come to the Festival Tent on Saturday morning with your kids for some crafts. Prepare for The Fresh Beats Parade (12 PM) with hat, mask and instrument making, drumming, and dressing up with Wee Giant puppets followed by a puppet performance by The Maritime Marionettes! This year’s 13th Deep Roots Music Festival offers something for everyone’s tastes so buy your pass now for a fun-filled fall weekend in the Annapolis Valley.   Last year’s main stage concerts sold out – don’t risk being disappointed this year!

Deep Roots Music Cooperative goes to school …

2016 Deep Roots Festival News, 2016 Deep Roots News

Music is important as a catalyst for learning; as well, music can support and nurture engagement and self-esteem in children.   Since part of the Deep Roots Music Cooperate vision is about making meaningful musical connections, we see a wonderful opportunity here. One of our new projects this year involves sending a musician into the school system. We call it “Musicians in Schools.”

Our pilot project is happening at the Coldbrook School, and involves Deep Roots supporting local musician Scott Hupman in using his natural talents to engage with young musicians. The project will continue to unfold and evolve as feedback happens but a lot of excitement exists about the possibilities.  Based on evaluation of outcomes on this pilot, we anticipate continuing to develop and spread the musical connections.

Stay tuned for more information on this exciting venture! In the meantime, if you are interested, check out this link to one music project in the UK fully supporting this concept that music can rock the world of students in all kinds of positive ways: https://www.facebook.com/BBCmusic-in-school-video.
