Geometry of Songs: Circles, Triangles and Squares, Al Whittle

Born on the prairies and raised in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Rebecca Fairless writes songs that encompass both the warmth and the austerity of a bright Alberta sun in a wide winter sky.

Playing the piano from the age of five, Rebecca went on to teach herself guitar and mandolin. Inspired by songwriters like Gillian Welch and Neko Case, Rebecca’s succinct lyrics and sparse arrangements elegantly convey the darkness and light of living. After a difficult recovery from a concussion, Rebecca moved across the country to study music. In the town of Wolfville, Nova Scotia, long-dormant seeds of songs took root. In 2018, Rebecca took part in a collaborative recording project: four songwriters, four voices, and twelve songs. The result was the album Like Coming Home, released on Ruby Throated Records. These dozen songs reflect the experiences of four women living along the Bay of Fundy.

Now making her home in Halifax, Rebecca works as a music therapist and regularly hosts house concerts in her living room. She also enjoys playing the pipe organ and petting cats.

Deep Roots is excited to welcome Rebecca to our Festival this year.  Be prepared to be delighted!
