Heather has a background in education and frequently offers song-writing workshops for youth and adults. Her teaching style is interactive and collaborative while also encouraging free form creative writing to guide each individual’s song composition. Workshops include both group songwriting and independent songwriting, performance tips, theme development and open jamming as well as music recording techniques. In addition, Heather can offer mentorship opportunities in the business of music and in how to build a career as a singer-songwriter. She is an instructor in this years Deep Roots Music Camp and is also part of an exciting new band, Ida Red, playing at the Festival this year.
According to local legend, Dennis Robinson was raised by wolves, which is likely what led him down the dark path to a life of old-time fiddle tunes. He has been playing Celtic and old-time fiddle and mandolin, all over Canada and beyond, since the folk revival of the 70s, and he is now the fiery heart of Ida Red. Dennis has learned all the best bad habits directly from old-time masters such as Jody Stecher and Tommy Jarrell, and is eager to share them with his students at the Deep Roots Music Camp.
Kim Barlow is an enduring presence in the Canadian indie-folk scene. She’s recorded six albums of her own work, and has many collaborations on the go at all times. Her newest band is Ida Red, a rowdy string band co-fronted with Gaspereau star Heather Kelday. Since returning to Nova Scotia last year, Barlow has a growing student roster at her home in Canning. Barlow has taught at summer camps for kids and adults all over Canada and Alaska. She loves teaching banjo (and ukulele), and she loves summer camp, and is very excited to get the shiny new Deep Roots Music Camp up and running this year.
