WOLFVILLE, NS – The Deep Roots Music Festival (September 22-24) returns after three years of interruption. Volunteers are preparing for the 17th edition of the Annapolis Valley event, in the hopes that hurricanes and pandemics are past occurrences, that festival goers will gather once again and experience good health, great weather, and amazing music during the last full weekend in September 2023!
A Festival Pass gets you 3 Main Stage concerts at Festival Theatre, 12 acts over 3 days, as well as the Saturday song circles and workshops at Festival Theatre and Al Whittle Theatre.

Friday: David Myles Trio, Kaia Kater, David Celia & Zuffalo, Freya Milliken – host Jeff Douglas
Saturday: Jim Cuddy & Sons, Jenn Grant, Scott Cook with Pamela Mae, Valmy – host Bill Roach
Sunday: Garrett Mason, Factory Girls, Jamie Junger, Jacques Surrette – host Darrin Harvey

There will be a free Wolfville Library Patio Concert at noon on Friday with Freya Milliken and Kaia Kater, weather depending, and free music on Friday afternoon at the Just Us! Festival Tent, located in Wolfville’s Clock Park, culminating with the electrifying Garrett Mason. All day on Saturday there is free programming at the tent too, with arts & crafts, face painting, drumming, the annual Fresh Beats Rhythm Parade with the Wee Giant Theatre puppets, Barlow & Bergen Music Box Theatre, ECMA Children’s Entertainer of the Year: Matt the Music Man, and the Deep Roots Open Mic, if you care to join our hosts, HUSH.

There will be a Deep Roots stage at the Wolfville Farmers’ Market on Saturday, featuring The Chimney Swifts, Barncat, led by Daniel James McFadyen, and more. For those who find the Market morning hours a little too early, both bands can be seen playing Friday or Saturday night at long-standing sponsor Paddy’s Pub in Wolfville – along with Jamie Junger & the Jungernauts, and David Celia & Zuffalo. The pub is often full for these late-night events.

The Deep Roots Revue will take place on Saturday night at Devour! Studios in Wolfville, a welcome return and a chance to dance the night away. Hosted by poet J.G. Lutes with music supplied by The Sundries and Height Requirement, from country standards to 80’s classics… dance, dance, dance! Tickets available through http://deeprootsmusic.ca/ and at any TicketPro outlet (sold separately from the Festival Pass)

Deep Roots has two Artists@Acadia events this year. Dylan Jewers (Big Turnip Records/Events, Helen Creighton Folklore Society) will speak on Thursday, September 21 as part of the Acadia School of Music’s Concert Credit afternoons. Sandy Lynn Fisher will offer a Smudge Ceremony along with her daughter, Lily-Beth, on Friday morning near the Just Us! Festival Tent, and then speak at the KC Irving Centre Garden Room Friday afternoon. Both talks are open to the public.

The festivities will begin with a couple of small gatherings at community venues: a benefit/sing-along for the Valley Community Learning Association (Kentville, NS) led by Rebecca Fairless (of Dusty Halos), as well as a taping of Zakary Miller’s ‘The Friendly Heckler’ podcast at recently opened, Ross Creek Annex (Canning, NS), featuring special guests Factory Girls. (Tickets sold separately from the Festival Pass.)
